As you may know, Georgia's Race to the Top Application required science to be the AYP second indicator for all elementary and middle schools. This change was to become effective this year.. Since this policy change would require a renewed focus on science at the elementary and middle school levels, the DOE applied for a waiver from the federal government. The waver was granted and 2012 has been designated a “Hold Harmless” year for science and AYP. Attendance, as in the past will be used as the secondary indicator.
Science will be counted as the secondary indicator beginning with the 2013 AYP determinations. The science department is working to offer additional instructional support and resources to district administrators and teachers for strengthening K-8 science programs across the district.
