Welcome Back!

As the new school year begins and I, too, begin my first full year as the K-5 Mathematics Supervisor, I'd like to wish all teachers and educators visiting our math site a warm welcome and best wishes for a happy and successful year with their students.

As usual, the Cobb elementary math department is already busy preparing itself for the beginning of school and in particular, this year, we are gearing up for the full K-5 implementation of the Georgia Performance Standards.  The District Math Coachs are shortly to present the Daily Math RAP which is our new piece emphasizing review and practice through daily routines.

Cobb has also just undergone a new textbook adoption and everyone is becoming familiar with the new materials from Harcourt.  We have made a concerted effort to incorporate teacher ideas and feedback from their experiences with students this past school year and our new unit outlines just posted on PICASSO will reflect this.  I am sure that teachers will be as excited about the changes as we are!

I am delighted to be able to be of service to all educators, students, and parents in Cobb.

Sincerely,

Margaret Moss

Subtle Changes in Store for Cobb's Elementary Math Program

As the end of the school year approaches, teachers will notice a few subtle changes related to Cobb's elementary math program. We welcome Margaret Moss, a new elementary math supervisor, new instructional materials and resources, and look forward to the refinement of units and lessons on PICASSO.

There will still be an emphasis on review and practice through daily routines, multiple representation of concepts and operations, problem solving, and oral and written explanation and justification.  You will find that the soon to be posted revised unit outlines will more easily allow you to implement the new materials. A concerted effort has been made to incorporate teacher ideas and feedback from the experiences with students this year.

I have certainly enjoyed my work with teachers, students, parents, and administrators over these last six years. I will continue to support the best of mathematics instruction as I work with K-12 curriculum.

Sincerely,

Amy Krause

Implementation of 3rd, 4th, and 5th GPS

During the first few weeks of school, Math Facilitators and myself have made an effort to talk and listen to teachers regarding implementation of the GPS.  Through grade level planning sessions, after-school trainings, and individual conversations, many questions have been collected.  You will find responses to many of those questions by clicking on the following:

Welcome to Cobb's Elementary Math Blog Site!

This Elementary Math BLOG has been created for Cobb County Elementary teachers to:

  • find teacher made and online instructional resources recommended for district use,
  • share ideas and successes related to mathematics instruction and assessment,
  • provide feedback regarding Cobb's math curriculum and tools, and
  • raise concerns and offer suggestions.

I invite you to respond to postings and questions and investigate the tools and resources provided for your use.  If this is your first visit please review the Netiquette suggestions.  Math Facilitators and I will be providing responses to questions raised. It is my hope that this tool will increase communication and collaboration among teachers across the district.

Happy BLOGGING!
