Here are the updated forms for the Georgia Science Engineering Fair.  You may download these by clicking the zipped folder below.  There were a couple of rule changes this year.  I am attaching this document separately for your reference.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Lego RoboDay Event

When: August 28, 2011

RoboDay is an interactive workshop for teachers and students who are interested in participating in FIRST LEGO League Robotics. Teachers may bring 2 students per robot kit with a limit of 4 students per team. 

Each pair of students should bring their NXT Robot set and resource set and a completed robot. Please do not come without a robot that meets the following specifications. You will not have time to build one before classes begin.

Your robot must be able to

1.    can roll forward, backward, and turn

2.    has a sonar sensor attached to detect objects that may be up to 4 inches high

3.    has a light sensor facing downward attached and can detect reflected light from the floor

4.    has a touch sensor attached anywhere on the body of the robot.

Outdoor Classroom Symposium - Nov. 5th @ Zoo Atlanta

Georgia's 14th annual Outdoor Classroom Symposium will be held Friday, November 5, 2010, at Zoo Atlanta! 

The theme of "Get Outdoors! Teaching Locally, Connecting Globally" will feature hands-on sessions on how to create outdoor teaching spaces, how to how to teach outdoors, and how to use local resources to make connections to the larger world. 

New this year, three speakers will give presentations in Zoo Atlanta’s auditorium:
• Daron Joffe AKA "Farmer D" of Farmer D Organics
• Jerry Hightower, Outdoor Educator Extraordinaire from the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area
• Dr. Joe Mendelson, Curator of Herpetology at Zoo Atlanta 

Other highlights will include "make and take" classes, informative exhibits prepared by program providers and outdoor classroom experts, presentation of the Outdoor Classroom Service Award, and endless opportunities for networking and inspiration!

Science Curriculum Briefings for August 13, 2010

Georgia Science Teacher’s Association (GSTA) Conference

GSTA is currently accepting proposals to present at this year’s conference in to be held in Atlanta on Feb. 17-19, 2011.  Proposals to present are due on September 1, 2010.  The science department will have a limited amount of funds to send teachers to the conference.  You must be accepted to present at the conference to be eligible for these funds. 

Action Required: Teachers should visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/gsta2011prop and apply to present at the GSTA conference. 

 

 

PICASSO Resources Update

Benchmarks have been posted on PICASSO for quarter 1.  The benchmarks underwent significant revisions over the spring and summer.  Directions to access the Science online resources that came with our most recent science adoption are posted on PICASSO.  These can be found to the right of the course guides for each grade level. 

 

Georgia Science & Engineering Fair (GSEF)

The Cobb/Paulding Science & Engineering Fair will be held at Wheeler HS on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011.  There were minimal changes to the rules from last year to this year.  The GSEF coordinators are working to get forms and resources posted.  In the meantime teachers may download and use the ISEF forms from http://www.societyforscience.org/isef/document.  These are essentially the same exact documents used at GSEF.  More information will be posted on the 6-12 Science BLOG.

Action Required: Teachers interested in having students participate in GSEF should visit the link above to access the required forms and information.

 

Science Consumable Funds & Hands-On Resources - (Middle Schools Only)

Schools will be receiving science consumable funds in September.  Each school will receive approximately $1.00 per student in science consumable funds.  More guidance and direction regarding the use of consumable funds will be forthcoming.  

Seventh grade teachers will be receiving owl pellets as they have in the past.  These are at the CCSD warehouse and will be shipped to schools within the next two weeks. 

Action Required: Generate a list of necessary lab supplies to purchase with consumable funds.  Be on the lookout for owl pellets for 7^th grade teachers by the end of the month.
